Make Your Own Gluten Free Croutons
Try to find yummy gluten free croutons in the grocery aisle. Dave dared me. I came back empty handed. What’s a girl to do? He said, “Make your own gluten free croutons!” So, I did. And guess what? They taste amazing, and we customize each savory batch to satisfy everyone’s craving. Totally addicting. I could snack on them all afternoon as I bake. Our daughter takes them to school in her lunch. Dave loves to add them to both soup and salad. How do you crouton?
Customize Your Gluten Free Croutons (make mine crispy & savory!)
What makes this crouton recipe so awesome is the flexibility it offers to meet your taste buds at the party. Make them savory with fresh or dried herbs. Adjust the salt and pepper or use your favorite seasoning salt. Our version calls for butter and oil. You may use either one or any weight combination of each. Need cheese? Finely grated Parmesan would do. Do not forget best part – the bread! We have several gluten free bread recipes made with Flour Farm that will knock your socks off. Simple and savory, make your own gluten free Croutons. Customize the recipe with your favorite oils and seasonings. Enjoy in soups, salads, or on their own. Delicious!

- 454g (1 lb) Loaf of GF Bread, 1–2 days old, cut or torn into desired sized (we like 1/2″ cubes)
- 2 T Butter, melted (28g)
- 2 T Favorite Oil (30 ml) note: add more butter or oil to taste
- 2 tsp Italian Seasoning, or your favorite (2 T if using fresh & finely chopped)
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder (1g)
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder (1.5g)
- 3/4 tsp Sea Salt (4.5g)
- 1/2 tsp Ground Black Pepper (1g)
- Optional: Grated Parmesan/Romano Cheese, to taste
Equipment: Digital scale (preferred), Rimmed Baking Sheet, Unbleached parchment, Measuring cups and spoons, Large bowl, Sharp Knife, Cutting board, Spatula
Before You Dive In – Prep: Please read!
- Cut bread into desired pieces
- Melt butter, if using
- Chop herbs, if using fresh
- Place oven rack in center
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 C)
- Place parchment on baking sheet
Step 1: Place cubed/torn bread in a large bowl.
Step 2: In a liquid measuring cup, whisk together the melted butter and oil. Add the seasonings and whisk again.
Step 3: Pour the liquid over bread cubes. Use your hands and gently toss to evenly distribute over cubes. Now would be the time to add grated cheese to taste.
Step 4: Transfer bread cubes to a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread cubes evenly over sheet. Make sure cubes are not touching. Place baking sheet in the center of a preheated 375 F/190 C oven. Bake for 5-10 minutes, turn cubes with a spatula and bake for another 5-10 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning. Bake time will depend on the size of your croutons and how crunchy you want them – use these times as a guide.
Step 5: Remove from oven and place pan on a cooling rack. Cool completely before storing. Use immediately.
To store: Store on the counter in a container with a loose fitting lid for up to 3 days, (a tight lid may cause croutons to soften and lose crunch,) or in the freezer for up to a month. Reheat in a 350 F/177 C oven until warm and crunchy.
